Burnham Park: 31st Auxiliary Parking Lot Expansion

Chicago Park District

Civiltech Engineering, Inc. provided civil engineering services to the Chicago Park District for the expansion of an existing parking lot on 31st Street near South Lake Shore Drive. The existing parking lot serves the 31st Street Beach and Marina, and provides winter boat storage for the marina users. The parking facility was inadequate for the areas growing demands.

Civiltech provided a storm water design that allows all storm water runoff from the parking lot to remain on site and infiltrate into the underlying soils. Catch basins intercept runoff from impervious surfaces and route the runoff to a porous aggregate layer underlying the southern parking lot expansion. The medians utilize pervious pavement and porous aggregate to capture runoff and allow for fluctuating water levels.

Civiltech worked with a team of sub consultants to complete the landscape design, camera surveillance system, and automated access gate system system. The parking lot layout and the gate placement were optimized to allow multiple configurations and uses for changing demands.

Civiltech is also providing part-time construction monitoring and attends weekly on-site meetings to ensure conformance with the Contract Documents.
