Barrington Road/Schaumburg Road Intersection Improvement

Village of Schaumburg

This CMAQ project consisted of widening and resurfacing of the Barrington Road/Schaumburg Road intersection. A two stage improvement plan was developed to accommodate future traffic growth. Stage 1 includes the widening and resurfacing of the intersection to provide dual left turn lanes on all four legs of the intersection. The Stage 2 improvement includes constructing an additional through lane on Barrington Road.

Phase I of the engineering services included data collection, traffic analyses, accident analysis, pavement design, a Location Drainage Study, public involvement, and preparation of a Project Development Report for Categorical Exclusion.

Civiltech performed the Phase II engineering for the Stage 1 improvements. This work included the preparation of detailed construction staging plans to maintain two-way traffic on Barrington Road and Schaumburg Road, while minimizing the number of stages required. Revisions to the Phase I report have been required because of changes to the existing conditions between the end of Phase I and the start of Phase II. These revisions required the input and approval of the Cook County Highway Department since they have jurisdiction over Schaumburg Road.

Utility coordination is also a major component of the project. Multiple utilities will need to be relocated as a result of the pavement widening. Right-of-way will be acquired from 14 parcels in the form of permanent takes and temporary easements. Federal funds will be used for the land acquisition services, as well as the land costs.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2013.
