Northwest Tollway I-90 at I-39 Cherry Valley Interchange

Civiltech Engineering provided Construction Engineering Services for this massive improvement. The project is a complete geometric overhaul of the interchange to allow safer and more efficient movement of traffic between the two interstates. A tight radius circular ramp is being replaced with a quarter mile long flyover structure. The flyover bridge has curves and skewed beams which had to be closely monitored during shop drawing and fabrication to be certain of a proper fit. Our efforts led to the fabricator laying out and fitting up all the steel on their plant floor so that all connections were assured before delivery to the job site. This structure also includes hammer head piers, a post tensioned pier that spans traffic lanes, and abutments founded on decorative Mechanically Stabilized Earth walls.

The Newburg Road bridge was also completely removed and a new longer structure built to provide for more lanes of traffic below. This particular bridge had to be completed per the contract in only four months to allow the next stage of traffic control to commence. The traffic control was revised and tweaked by our team, which resulted in less disruption to traffic and a larger work zone. Civiltech’s coordination of the multiple traffic stage switches that are required for this two interstate project has directly contributed to keeping this improvement moving forward towards an early completion.

The Cherry Valley Interchange Improvement was such a success that it has been awarded the number four project of the Top Ten Bridge projects nationwide by Roads and Bridges magazine. It also received the prestigious Project/Contractor of the Year from the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association for Tollway projects.
