Naperville Road / Warrenville Road / I-88 East-West Tollway Improvement

The improvement included the design of a single point urban interchange (SPUI) at the intersection of Naperville Road/Warrenville Road.  Naperville Road and Warrenville Road were widened to 6 lanes and each of the entrance/exit ramps to Warrenville Road were constructed as 2-lane facilities.

Instrumental to the success of the project with an increase in capacity at the intersection of Naperville Road and Warrenville Road was the modification of the I-88/Naperville Road Interchange. The improvement included the construction of Freedom Drive between Diehl Road and Warrenville Road. The I-88 eastbound exit ramp, westbound exit ramp, and the westbound entrance ramp that previously terminated at Naperville Road now terminates at Freedom Drive. This resulted in a decrease in the traffic volume using Naperville Road. As part of this plan, the storage capacity of the existing interchange also increased by widening the westbound and eastbound exit ramps to provide a 2-lane exit terminal.

These improvements required the reconstruction of the mainline Tollway structure over Naperville Road to accommodate the widening of Naperville Road as well as a new structure for I-88 over Freedom Drive.

Civiltech completed the preliminary plan for the entire improvement. The preliminary engineering plans included detailed horizontal and vertical geometrics for the entire improvement including the interchange as well as the preparation of an interchange design study, bridge studies, and toll plaza layout.

The project was downsized after the preliminary plan phase because of funding constraints. The SPUI at Naperville Road and Warrenville Road along with lane additions to Warrenville Road were removed from the project.

Civiltech completed the final engineering plans for the entire improvement except the Tollway Ramps and Plazas and the I-88 bridges over Naperville Road and Connector Road. As part of this project, Civiltech has developed plans for the City of Naperville Electric Department’s duct banks throughout the project limits.
