Cass Avenue Bridge & IL Route 83 Bridge over I-55

This project consists of rehabilitation of two bridges and the improvements to the approach roadways at two locations along Interstate 55 in DuPage County.

The first bridge for which plans and specifications have been prepared is the Cass Avenue bridge over I-55. The improvements include removal and replacement of the concrete bridge deck, reconstruction of the abutment backwalls, replacement of the existing roller bearings with elastomeric bearings, jacking of the bridge to achieve the required clearance, and removal and replacement of the approach pavement.

The second bridge for which plans and specifications were prepared is the twin Illinois Route 83 bridges over I-55. The improvements to the bridges included removal and replacement of the concrete deck and steel beams, reconstruction of the abutments and pier caps, repair of the remaining substructure units. The improvements to the roadway included resurfacing and widening of Illinois Route 83 to provide the appropriate taper lengths between the six-lane pavement section at Central Avenue and the four-lane pavement section at Timberlake Drive. At the intersection of Route 83 and Central Avenue, the east and north legs were widened to provide left-turn/through lanes and a right-turn lane, and the traffic signal was modified. Underpass lighting was provided for the IL Route 83 Bridges over I-55. Field survey was provided by a minority sub-consultant.
