Washington Street Phase I Study

Washington Street Phase I Study

Lake County Division of Transportation

Washington Street is currently a two-lane roadway located along the southern edge of Round Lake in the communities of Round Lake, Round Lake Park, and Hainesville. The project area, which was originally rural in nature with abutting residences serving as summer cottages near the lake, has become an urbanized area. Numerous driveways and cross streets exist along the route and this, combined with the lack of dedicated turn lanes, has resulted in a large number of left turn and rear end collisions. The proposed improvement consists of reconstructing and widening Washington Street to provide a center turning median to improve safety as well as operation. There is also the need to provide pedestrian and cyclist accommodations as these modes of travel currently occur along the intermittent gravel shoulders. Several cross section alternatives were evaluated, in order to accommodate the project needs but also minimize impacts to adjacent properties. The existing right-of-way is extremely narrow with residences constructed close to the roadway.

The project required extensive coordination with the Villages of Hainesville, Round Lake, and Round Lake Park in order to ensure that local needs were being met in regard to capacity, safety, and drainage improvements.
